Starting in 2026, Residential Recovery May Be More Possible Than You Think

For many people, the hardest part of getting help is not the treatment itself. It’s the fear of losing your job… your paycheck… or your stability.

But beginning January 1, 2026, Minnesota’s new Paid Family & Medical Leave program changes that. For the first time, most Minnesota workers will have the ability to take paid time off to care for their own health—including entering a residential recovery program.

If you’ve been waiting for “the right moment,” this may finally be it.

What is Paid Leave?

The Minnesota Paid Leave program provides payments and job protections when you need time off to care for yourself or your family. Residential treatment for substance use disorder qualifies as a “serious health condition,” and the state allows medical leave for exactly that purpose.  This means you can focus on getting better without worrying about losing your job.

How Do You Know If You Qualify?

You might qualify if:

  • You worked in Minnesota in the last year.
  • If you earned at least $3,900 in Minnesota wages in the past twelve months, you may be eligible.
  • You’re an employee.
  • Most workers are covered—regardless of employer size, part-time hours, or schedule.
  • A healthcare provider can certify your need for treatment.
  • Residential recovery programs meet the state’s definition of a serious health condition lasting more than seven days.
  • You need time to heal.
  • You may receive up to 12 weeks of paid medical leave, or up to 20 weeks total if other family-related needs apply.
  • You depend on your paycheck.
  • Paid Leave covers up to 90% of your usual income, with a weekly cap set by the state ($1,423 for 2026).
  • You’re worried about losing your job.
  • Paid Leave includes strong job protections. If you’ve been employed at least 90 days, your employer must restore you to your job or an equivalent one when you return.

What This Means for Your Recovery

Entering treatment is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign of incredible strength. And now, Minnesota has structured the Paid Leave program so people can take that step without risking their livelihood. For many, this removes the single biggest barrier to seeking help.

If you've been thinking “I can’t afford to go,” or “My job won’t survive if I leave,” this program can change your future. It may be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.
